Blue Nile Review: The Internet's First Online Brand

Blue Nile stands out as the premier luxury online diamond retail brand, offering an unparalleled selection of certified diamonds, competitive pricing, innovative technology and diamond experts that are not salespeople

This guide aims to provide comprehensive information to assist consumers in making informed purchase decisions. We carefully analyze every diamond jewelry and diamond engagement ring retailer to deliver the best advice on how to optimize value and where to get the most for your money. Our goal is to organize and present all the things that consumers should know before buying. We writes these articles personally (never with AI) and we update them regularly based upon our understanding only an insider would know. Our Editor has spent four decades as a global leader in the diamond jewelry industry having led six wholesale and retail jewelry companies, been a select client of DeBeers and a pioneer in the birth of lab grown diamonds. His family has been in the diamond business for over a century.

Purchasing a diamond or diamond engagement ring is a significant investment and can be intimidating and even frightening. Consumers often worry about making informed decisions and finding trustworthy retailers. When purchasing a product with which one is unfamiliar, it is important to invest the time to get educated on both the product, and the sellers of that product. A diamond engagement ring will symbolize a lifetime commitment and is a permanent display to friends, family and colleagues. The diamond, ring design, quality and the craftsmanship must meet or exceed all expectations. All data referenced in these reviews are as of the date of the review, we are not responsible for updating information as prices change constantly. Also, we are not compensated to write these reviews as they are independent of any given retailer or brand.

Blue Nile was the very first and remains the very best places to shop for online diamonds, diamond engagement rings and diamond jewelry since 1999. Though they've had a bumpy decade changing hands through private equity ownership in a take private following their initial public offering, and later a failed attempt at a public offering, similar to James Allen, they are now owned by Signet Jewelers.

Blue Nile Overview

Blue Nile Review 2025: Leading Luxury Online Jeweler for Natural and Lab Grown Diamonds, Diamond Engagement Rings, Wedding Bands and Diamond Jewelry

This in-depth review of Blue Nile, examines and evaluates its long history as an industry pioneer and early positioning as the ‘Tiffany’ of online jewelers, its evolution and integration into a larger corporation and why it always has been and remains a top choice for diamonds, diamond jewelry and diamond engagement rings.

Introduction to the Blue Nile Brand

When Blue Nile launched in 1999 with thousands of only the best and finest luxury-quality natural diamonds at prices that were a fraction of what was offered in elite stores, the entire diamond industry trembled in fear. This was the first major disruption of diamond retailing in memory. The internet was new, and an online bookseller named Amazon had in four years grown from zero to $1.64 billion in sales. Blue Nile, however, was a luxury brand that set out to be the Tiffany of online jewelers, with many times the selection of diamonds available at Tiffany’s and at half the price. Where an average jewelry store bought a handful of diamonds and hoped to turn their inventory one time a year, Blue Nile bought almost no diamonds but rather displayed thousands of diamonds on consignment or virtual consignment from manufacturers and diamond dealers and turned their inventory more than twelve times a year. Retailers had a 50% margin, whereas Blue Nile had 22% margin which later went as low as 17%. Retail jewelers lived in terror of customers coming in with printouts of Blue Nile GIA certificated diamonds asking them to match the price.

Blue Nile Brand Heritage, Background and Evolution

Within a few years of its founding Blue Nile was selling more than $100m of diamonds and diamond engagement rings. They went public on May 18th, 2004 and their stock rose 39% on the first day of a much celebrated IPO. Twice our Co-Founder was involved in groups looking to buy Blue Nile. Both times the company was sold to other bidders. On November 7, 2016 Bain Capital, a private equity behemoth, bought the company for an estimated $500m. The bankers did not demonstrate an understanding of luxury brands or diamonds. On August 9, 2022 Blue Nile was again acquired, this time by Signet for $360m. Blue Nile had returned from the hands of private equity bankers to being owned and managed by jewelers, which would prove to be great for Blue Nile and for consumers.

Signet (NYSE: SIG) is the world’s largest diamond jewelry retail conglomerate with annual sales exceeding $7bn. From its headquarters in Akron, Ohio, Signet owns and operates approximately 2,700 diamond jewelry stores through 21 national and 10 regional diamond jewelry brands in three countries. In the United States the national brands include Zales, Diamond’s Direct, Jared’s, Kay Jewelers, Banter by Piercing Pagoda, Rocksbox, James Allen and Blue Nile. In Canada, Peoples Jewellers. And in the United Kingdom, H. Samuel and Ernest Jones in the United Kingdom.

What the combination of Blue Nile and Signet means for consumers is that Signet, the world’s largest buyer of diamonds, engagement rings and jewelry, has put their powerful supply chain, huge diamond inventory and design capability behind the online world’s oldest and most trusted luxury brand.

It means consumers can trust Blue Nile more than ever and do not need to worry about the longevity of their warranties or trade ups: Signet has maintained a strong history of profitability and growth for decades,

Blue Nile Product Range and Quality

Blue Nile Diamonds

Blue Nile complies with the Kimberley Process, the global protocol created by the diamond trade to stop the mining and the sale of conflict diamonds. The company is also a member of the Responsible Jewelry Council, of which parent company Signet was a founding member. Blue Nile meets with our approval in their efforts and commitment to selling certified, ethically sourced, conflict-free diamonds.

Our Editor spent years in the mined diamond business but left in part as he learned more about the legacy of mined diamonds and the many loopholes within the Kimberly Process. His early involvement in lab grown diamonds was largely driven as an effort at personal redemption. He believes that in our efforts to perpetually improve the enforcement of conflict free diamond mining and trading we must be ever vigilant and relentless. The Kimberly Process was established in 2003 and the Responsible Jewelry Council was founded in 2005. Little if anything more has been done in the ensuing decades. He has been known to quote the words of Ethics of the Fathers that though “We are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are we free to desist from it”.

It is essential that a consumer come to understand the difference between price and value when buying a diamond. All four C’s (color, clarity, cut and carat size – see our section on certification below) impact the price of a diamond and must be considered before determining value. Quality of craftsmanship is also critical. Integrity and trustworthiness of the jeweler, however, are of paramount concern when spending thousands of dollars buying a diamond. As a buyer, you can be confident that Blue Nile’s diamonds are indeed conflict free and are curated for best gemological laboratory certification and best of all four C’s. Their fine reputation was only augmented by the association with Signet whom we know to be authentic in their ongoing dedication to carry only conflict free diamonds. All data and charts are reflective of data gathered in February 2025.

Blue Nile Natural Diamonds

We appreciate and respect that unlike most other online jewelers, but like most guild or luxury stores such as Cartier, every single mined diamond offered for sale by Blue Nile is certified by the GIA and no other gemological laboratory. Our analysis yielded observed the count of non-GIA certified diamonds on the top three online jewelers on February 23, 2025 and concluded while other top brands had anywhere from 1,960 to 13,380, Blue Nile had 0.

The GIA is not only the oldest and most respected gemological laboratory in the world, but they are also a nonprofit organization and a school. It is quite telling that their URL is not GIA.com, but rather GIA.edu. The GIA invented the 4C’s system of diamond grading and their website is among the very best resources by which a consumer can educate themselves on mined diamonds.

Diamond certification by smaller and for profit gemological laboratories like the IGI or HRD is less expensive than the GIA, but does not carry the same authority. By offering consumers only GIA certified natural diamonds, Blue Nile is making clear that it is a jeweler that prioritizes quality and luxury over all other considerations. Blue Nile is a brand for the customer who wants the best and only the best.

As an indication of their positioning as the premier luxury online jeweler, Blue Nile was observed to offer more of the very rarest, larger carat weight, GIA certified diamonds in the world, D Flawless, than any of the top online jewelers.

According to the GIA, something like 100,000 tons of earth must be processed to a single D Flawless, and few of those are as large as 2 carats. It is estimated that only 0.001% of all mined diamonds are D, the highest color and Flawless the highest clarity grade.

Of course, we understand few of our readers will be shopping for diamonds at this price. Our analysts felt it was important, however, to make buyers aware of the similar positioning of Blue Nile with Cartier, Tiffany or the high end jeweler or Rolex dealer in your community.

Some other online jewelers clutter their site with many diamonds of lower quality. We like that Blue Nile makes the shopping experience much easier by curating a selection of the world’s best diamonds. We also like that many of the diamonds on Blue Nile that our analysts surveyed were relatively recently certified. This indicates that Blue Nile has carefully selected every diamond it posts for sale. Some online diamond retailers allow any diamond cutter or manufacturer to post any diamond on their websites and will have older certificates. When looking at round and oval cuts ( the most popular ) buyers should be alert to the possibility that an older, slow to sell diamond may very well have a poor grade on one of the other 4C’s—generally the cut, or has a high degree of fluorescence.

Drawing on over four decades of experience, our Editor notes that Blue Nile’s luxury positioning and their commitment to offering a curated selection of only GIA, recently certified natural diamonds is clear evidence of their ongoing, 25 year dedication to quality. Blue Nile customers receive gems evaluated not only by the industry’s most respected grading authority, the GIA, –known for its strict standards in assessing the 4C’s, cut, color, clarity and carat weight. but that also meet the rigorous ethical and luxury quality standards of the gemologists at Blue Nile. The Blue Nile box is synonymous with luxury and is recognized by discerning buyers and brides. When opened, customers behold a diamond that sparkles with a blinding brilliance as scintillating as the stars. Blue Nile’s diamonds, diamond engagement rings and jewelry meet or exceed the highest standards of quality. As importantly, the brand tells a story of impeccable craftsmanship and exquisite artistry.

Our team have produced a detailed analysis of the different natural diamond cuts and shapes offered by Blue Nile on February 23. 2025 to develop a comprehensive conclusion of Blue Nile's natural diamond assortment, including over 86,000 round diamonds representing 58% of their available stones at the time of the analysis. Here is a sample GIA certificate we selected randomly from the Blue Nile online diamond store:

Summary of Blue Nile online natural diamonds:

  • Nearly 150,000 natural diamonds available

  • 100% are GIA-certified

  • 100% are conflict-free

  • Largest and best selection of the rarest and finest diamonds

  • Wide variety of shapes and cuts, including

    • Round Brilliant cut: 86,641 diamonds

    • Fancy cuts: 63,174

Blue Nile Lab Grown Diamonds

There are nearly 50,000 lab grown diamonds on Blue Nile as of February 23, 2025. The gemologists at Blue Nile have carefully selected and curated the diamonds. Most of them, more than 44,500 are “colorless”, meaning the top three colors D, E and F. Nearly every diamond offered for sale on Blue Nile is VS2 or better, a very high clarity.

Blue Nile still has the majority of their lab grown diamonds certified by the GIA but offers a significant number of IGI certified diamonds. However, when our analysts reviewed the total assortment, we were pleased to see that significant diamonds, of 2 carat and larger, were predominantly GIA. It is good for consumers to have a choice. Though some may prefer the pedigree and authority of the GIA, others may favor the lower cost of an IGI certification.

The very best cut of a diamond is termed ‘Ideal”. The GIA will only grade round diamonds as Ideal. All other shapes, collectively known as fancy cut diamonds, are by definition irregular and very subjective as to how it interacts with your own eye. In the opinion of our Editor, the cut of a fancy is partly art and the cut of a round is purely science or math–the physics of light refraction. For this reason the GIA will not grant the Ideal cut grade to any other shape but round. The IGI gemological certification laboratory has expanded the Ideal grade to include princess cuts.

The overwhelming majority of round lab grown diamonds offered for sale on Blue Nile are Ideal cut – the very best cut. The overwhelming majority of IGI princess cuts on Blue Nile are certified as Ideal cut.

Our Editor and team were early pioneers in the validation and acceptance of lab grown diamonds in 2017. Over the last eight years, the technology for growing gem quality diamonds has improved, expanded and consolidated in the low cost centers of India. This has resulted in the price of lab grown diamonds coming down enormously. Because the cost of lab grown diamonds have corrected so much, the founder strongly advises consumers to only consider buying the topmost qualities, with 1 carat, F VS2, ideal cut as the minimum carat, color and clarity (more on this later). Blue Nile makes shopping for a lab grown diamond much easier by curating and limiting their assortment to what is best for consumers: The majority of the lab grown diamonds for sale on Blue Nile were 1carat, FVS2 or better. We appreciate Blue Nile pre-selecting the lab grown diamonds available on their site as it makes the buying process that much simpler.

We also appreciate that Blue Nile does not clutter their site with smaller sizes of lab grown diamonds so as to show a big (and confusing) number of diamonds for sale. With a GIA certified 2.03 carat, D VS2 round lab grown diamond selling for $2,740, a 1.51carat selling for $1,630 and a 1.03 carat for $930, we believe consumers should not consider anything less than a full 1 carat GIA certified diamond when buying a lab grown diamond from Blue Nile.

Blue Nile's Diamond Pricing and Value

Blue Nile Value

Whether you are buying natural or lab grown diamonds, the quality and reputation and broad recognition of Blue Nile as a luxury brand sets them apart from all other online jewelers. As primarily an online diamond jewelry company, the prices of Blue Nile’s diamonds are a fraction of what a consumer would pay in a traditional store. But unlike any other major online jeweler, you still can see the diamond or diamonds of your choosing in one of their 22 mall locations. This is of great value to many consumers who still may prefer to examine what will become a family heirloom in the physical company of a trained Blue Nile gemologist. More and more, couples shop together for diamonds and diamond engagement rings. Many of these couples prefer to examine, learn and choose the symbol of their bond together in the elegant surroundings of a Blue Nile store.

In addition to Blue Nile’s unique ability among online jewelers to show diamonds in a store before a customer buys, their aftercare is also world class. A customer has 30 days to return any purchase for a full refund and Blue Nile will pay the return shipping. Their trade in policies make it easy for a consumer to upgrade should they ever wish to have a larger or better quality diamond. Their lifetime manufacturers warranty is equal to or better than our survey group ( see detailed analysis below). Most of all, as part of the largest retailer of diamond jewelry in the world, with a heritage going back to 1949, a buyer can have unrivaled confidence that all warranties will be honored. Our Editor was a major supplier to several of the Signet divisions for decades. He knows the company well and knows they have the means to source their diamonds better than others, the morals to always stand behind their products and the money to be in business while others come and go.

Blue Nile Natural Diamond Price Comparison

In our survey of the largest three online retailers of diamonds, we compared the prices of a 1ct F VS2 excellent cut natural diamond certified by the GIA. Blue Nile offered the very best price by a margin of $100 to the next closest competitor.

Blue Nile Lab Grown Diamond Price Comparison

In our survey of the largest three online retailers of diamonds, we found that Blue Nile, though not always the lowest price, was generally within a few percentage points. In fact, close enough that we might be swayed in order to experience the high touch of the Blue Nile experience and the smile of recognition when the soon to be bride sees the elegant and familiar Blue Nile box.

Blue Nile's Diamond Buying Experience

The diamond is likely the most expensive part of any diamond engagement ring purchase so it is important to take the time to research and learn about the 4C’s. More on the 4C’s later.

Blue Nile Website Usability and User Experience

Being able to view any and all of the diamonds a buyer is considering is of primary importance. Whether in a store or online, a careful consumer will want to closely examine and compare many diamonds. The Blue Nile 360 HD diamond viewing system is the best available online and is a superior diamond viewing, comparing and buying system – superior to even what is available in stores.

When Blue Nile was acquired by Signet they upgraded the online diamond viewing and video system to the very best system in the world, the R2Net 360 HD system. This technology is now used to view every diamond on Blue Nile. There is nothing like it. In a store consumers might get to compare a few diamonds. Sometimes a shopper might even be handed a 10x magnifying glass or loupe, which takes weeks of training to use and be asked to hold a diamond in a special tweezer which also takes time to master. If they can manage a glimpse of a diamond this way, they are only able to view each diamond one at a time, preventing them from actually comparing side by side. On rare occasions a store might have a stereo microscope like this:

Under special LED white lighting meant to enhance the apparent color and sparkle, a buyer is shown one diamond at a time, and seldom at full magnification. Moreover, the prospective buyer is only able to view the top of the diamond and not the sides and bottom.

The Blue Nile 360° HD diamond imaging system magnifies every diamond 40x and allows a buyer to view top, bottom and sides. This is a significant leap beyond the industry norm of 10x top only magnification. This technology not only enhances the buyer’s confidence by allowing a detailed inspection of the diamond’s facets, but it also reduces the risk of misrepresentation, a common concern in online purchases. We like that Blue Nile shows actual diamonds when you search their website and not just lists with stock or still images because it makes it so easy to compare different diamonds. In our test we were able to compare six certified diamonds simultaneously on an iPhone.

and eight online diamonds simultaneously on a 15 inch MacBook pro.

We could instantly rotate the eight diamonds on our screen as slowly or quickly as we wanted and we could see the top, bottom and sides of every diamond. Being able to compare diamonds is the best way for a buyer to learn about diamonds and to identify the one they desire most. Blue Nile has perfected this process by ensuring consistency in every diamond video: same clarity, scale, aspect, lighting and background color.

As a shopper gets closer to a final decision, Blue Nile uses the R2Net technology to “Super Zoom” any diamond on the site. Here is an image of Super Zoom on my 15 inch Apple MacBook:

The GIA certificate of the diamond shown measures the diameter is 6.40 mm or ¼ of an inch! This same diamond measures nearly 4 inches on my Mac and 2 inches on my iPhone:

And the full 360 HD rotation works just as well in Super Zoom

Looking at multiple diamonds at the same time on Blue Nile is better than looking at a diamond under a microscope in a store. Blue Nile experts are there only when a customer wants them there through the online expert consultants we will review below. And perusing diamonds on your couch and in the privacy of your home or office is a less pressured experience. On your phone, ipad or desktop you can magnify any natural or lab grown diamond 40x and rotate it 360 degrees. The GIA, the most trusted geological laboratory in the world, certifies your diamond based upon 10x magnification. So having a technology that allows any buyer to examine any one of thousands of online diamonds by a magnification of 40x is clearly an advantage for the consumer. We have not seen a better system for buying diamonds.

Blue Nile's Customer Service and Support

Most first time buyers do not understand how to evaluate a diamond. Blue Nile is staffed with experts who are available to help answer all your questions. We appreciate that these are experts trained to serve customers and answer questions, not commissioned salespeople. No consumer wants to be rushed, pushed or manipulated into making a decision. Blue Nile customer service experts are experienced, knowledgeable, and are a free diamond education resource there to serve diamond shoppers.

Our Editor personally mystery shopped the free real time diamond inspection on Blue Nile

In our Editor’s instant-chat he found the Blue Nile diamond expert prompt, knowledgeable and patient in teaching and later suggesting alternative diamonds as options. We opened with a question about two diamonds and they instantly populated our screen

When we asked to see the sides of each of the diamonds she made them move so we could compare them side by side

She then showed us why one diamond was better than the other and where the imperfections were that she could see, but we needed her help to find

And when I suggested a more expensive diamond, she showed me why it was not a choice I should make.

I told her my budget was $3,400 and asked her to suggest a diamond up to $3,400. She showed me an amazing diamond for $2,540 and rather than push me up in price suggested I would be well served buying the less expensive one. That is not something a shopper should ever expect to hear from a commissioned salesperson in a store.

Testing her I asked if I could buy two diamonds and return one. Not only is Blue Nile willing to do this, they were happy to do it and said they would send the free pre-paid return labels and give me 30 days to return one–or both

The experts at Blue Nile deliver are there to help educate diamond shoppers and assist them in making the best choice. They are never pushy. This is the mark of a true luxury brand.

They are not kids fresh out of school either. The women I spoke with had been with Blue Nile for four years but in the jewelry industry for 20 years.

Without my requesting she offered to email me a transcript of our chat. It came in minutes, with all the detailed images of the imperfections circled in red and links to each of the diamonds.

Blue Nile is the place to shop for your diamond, diamond engagement ring or jewelry because of,

  • The extraordinary expert guidance offered by the Blue Nile diamond advisors

  • The amazing R2Net technology they use

  • The limitless choices of diamonds from which to choose and

  • The prices that are a fraction of stores.

Blue Nile diamond experts are there to educate a customer and help him or her find the diamond that best fits their budget and their dreams. They are not commissioned salespeople compelled and trained to force a sale. This is a luxury brand.

Blue Nile's Diamond Certificates and the 4 C's

Our Editor explains in detail how to understand the GIA sample certificate below

Date

The date the diamond was examined and certified by the gemologists at GIA. This is important for consumers because if a diamond is old inventory, there is probably something undesirable or sub standard about it.

Report Number

This is the individual GIA certificate number unique to this diamond. It has also been microscopically laser inscribed on the side of the diamond. It does not impact the refraction or shine and will not be visible without at least 10x magnification. This is important because it can protect buyers from diamond fraud or substitution, which, though rare, is a risk when repairing a ring at an unethical jeweler. The number is also logged on the global database of GIA certificates, providing a permanent record of your diamond. This can prove very important should a consumer need to make an insurance claim and cannot locate the printed certificate received when the purchase was made.

Shape

The outline of the diamond when viewed from the top down, while the cut is defined by the pattern of the facet arrangement. Most buyers prefer a round also known as a brilliant cut diamond. Other shapes are collectively referred to as fancies. The most popular of these today are oval, pear and emerald. Historically marquise and princess cuts were also popular,

Measurements

The diamond’s dimensions are in millimeters. For a round diamond it is the minimum and maximum diameter and the depth. Non round diamonds will use the length, width and depth. This is important information a buyer should learn and understand as these impact the brightness, fire or light of the diamond.

Carat Weight

The weight as measured in carats to the nearest 1/100th of a carat. A carat is equal to 0.2grams.

Color

Describes the degree to which a yellow hue is present. Color is graded on a scale from D-Z though most gem quality diamonds are within the D-J colors. D is the whitest and by K even an untrained eye can detect the yellow hue. This will be an important consideration for buyers as prices of a D color will be higher than a J, particularly for a natural diamond. The tradeoff a consumer will often have to make is between color and carat weight.

Clarity

Describes the degree to which natural inclusions or blemishes are visible under 10x magnification.

Cut

Determines the light reflecting properties, also known as the fire, scintillation or brilliance of the diamond’s appearance. In the opinion of our founder, cut is the most important of the 4C’s because even the finest diamond if poorly cut will not refract light optimally and thus will emit inferior fire and brilliance.

Polish

Polish describes the smoothness of a diamond's facets. A high-quality polish will leave little to no scratches and slightly optimizes for maximum brilliance.

Symmetry

Symmetry describes the degree to which a diamond's facets are mathematically aligned to emit maximum light. A symmetrical diamond emits high levels of fire and brilliance.

Fluorescence

Fluorescence causes diamonds to emit a soft, bluish glow when exposed to UV light. The Fluorescence grade describes the color, and strength of color when a diamond is graded under UV light. The founder prefers diamonds with no fluorescence.

Conclusion on Blue Nile Diamonds

Blue Nile remains the luxury online jeweler of choice. And after 25 years, they are still the only jeweler with 22 stores in most major cities. Some diamond or diamond engagement ring shoppers prefer shopping in a store or knowing there is a store nearby, just in case. Whatever your preference, Blue Nile makes it easy to shop for the right diamond in the quality you want and at a price that fits your budget. The information, education and ease of shopping they offer is born of a deep understanding of the 4C’s of diamond quality. Their exclusive use of GIA certification for each and every natural diamond is testimony to the dedication to luxury that has always defined the brand. In addition to their certification protocols , Blue Nile provides lifetime warranties on all diamond engagement rings and jewelry for manufacturer’s defects. Buying a diamond online from Blue Nile is made easy by their curation of the best diamonds and because they use the very best online diamond viewing technology, which came as part of the Signet acquisition. They are amazingly well priced, particularly for a luxury brand. They support every prospective buyer with skilled shopping assistance, patient and efficient customer service and attentive after purchase care.

We like the broad and deep offering of jewelry for every price point and every one of life’s special moments that Blue Nile offers. Some, however, may feel there are too many choices. The company does try and address this by including a search by price feature as well as robust conventional searching tool.

Blue Nile Aftercare

Shipping

Blue Nile offers free shipping worldwide and will ship all orders over $500 overnight, including the cost of return shipping. This takes all the risk out buying online before a consumer can actually see and touch the actual jewel as you might in a store. We believe this is better for consumers because the buyer can wear, examine and show others their jewelry without the pressure often associated with store salespeople.

Returns

Blue Nile stands behind their product with an industry standard 30 day return policy offering a 100% refund, and they will pay return shipping. Because you are buying your diamond ring or jewelry sight unseen, this is really important for buyers. Knowing you can return your ring or jewelry at no cost and get all your money back takes all the risk out of an online purchase versus being in a store. More importantly a customer can wear, examine and show others her diamond engagement ring, wedding band or jewelry in their own home and under their natural light. Jewelry stores spend a fortune on the best, whitest ceiling lights. And most in-cabinet lighting is just 18inches from the jewelry. This kind of light is entirely different from most people’s homes or normal outdoor daylight. Jewelry store lights are engineered to make all their diamonds explode with light. We believe it is always better to select your heirloom in the light and quiet of your own home than in the studio perfect light of a jewelry store.

Warranty

Blue Nile offers an industry standard lifetime warranty against manufacturer's defects.

Ring Resizing

They also offer a one time free ring resizing within the first year, which is industry standard.

Appraisal

All diamond engagement rings and jewelry over $800 come with an appraisal document for the retail replacement value. We advise shoppers to insure their ring. For homeowners this is a very small expense and may cost a bit more for renters. But just as you would not own a home or a car without insurance, we believe a diamond engagement ring should be insured for loss, theft or damage. Having an appraisal can be very important when making a claim.

24/7 Customer Service

Having a person and not a robot on the other end of a phone call or chat to discuss and review a diamond, jewelry style or the status of a purchase, repair or return distinguishes Blue Nile from most other jewelers. In our mystery shop, we were particularly pleased with the diamond expert with whom our Co-Founder interacted. We were particularly pleased she was an American and not someone in a distant country,

Lifetime Trade-in

The lifetime trade in/trade up policy is slightly sub standard on natural diamonds in that they demand the buyer purchase a new diamond for twice the price of the original diamond to apply 100% credit for the initial purchase.

They also offer zero trade in value for the ring or setting. Though this is disappointing, it is the least important of aftercare services as few consumers actually ever upgrade.

Blue Nile Review Conclusion

In conclusion, Blue Nile stands out as the premier luxury online diamond retail brand, offering an unparalleled selection of certified diamonds, competitive pricing, innovative technology and diamond experts that are not salespeople. The Blue Nile commitment to customer satisfaction is evident through comprehensive services like 24/7 support, lifetime warranty, and free cleaning and maintenance. The 22 mall based Blue Nile retail stores set Blue Nile apart from all other online jewelrs. We believe this distinction to be very important to a large cohort of diamond, diamond engagement ring and fine jewelry shoppers, who want the pay the price of an online jeweler but have the convenience of a physical jewelry store too. The myriad advantages of shopping at blue Nile make it a top choice for purchasing diamonds, diamond engagement rings and fine jewelry.
