James Allen Review: The Pioneer in 360 degree diamonds
James Allen stands out as a premier online diamond retailer, offering an unparalleled selection of certified diamonds, competitive pricing, innovative technology and diamond expertise that enhances and distinguishes the buying experience.
This guide aims to provide comprehensive information to assist consumers in making informed purchase decisions. We carefully analyze every diamond jewelry and diamond engagement ring retailer to deliver the best advice on how to optimize value and where to get the most for your money. Our goal is to organize and present all the things that consumers should know before buying. We writes these articles personally (never with AI) and we update them regularly based upon our understanding only an insider would know. Our Editor has spent four decades as a global leader in the diamond jewelry industry having led six wholesale and retail jewelry companies, been a select client of DeBeers and a pioneer in the birth of lab grown diamonds. His family has been in the diamond business for over a century.
Purchasing a diamond or diamond engagement ring is a significant investment and can be intimidating and even frightening. Consumers often worry about making informed decisions and finding trustworthy retailers. When purchasing a product with which one is unfamiliar, it is important to invest the time to get educated on both the product, and the sellers of that product. A diamond engagement ring will symbolize a lifetime commitment and is a permanent display to friends, family and colleagues. The diamond, ring design, quality and the craftsmanship must meet or exceed all expectations. All data referenced in these reviews are as of the date of the review, we are not responsible for updating information as prices change constantly. Also, we are not compensated to write these reviews as they are independent of any given retailer or brand.

James Allen Overview
James Allen Review 2025: Leading Online Retailer for Natural and Lab Grown Diamonds, Diamond Engagement Rings, Wedding Bands and Diamond Jewelry
This in-depth review of James Allen, examines and evaluates its extensive diamond selection, competitive pricing, exceptional customer service, and why it’s a top choice for diamonds, diamond jewelry and diamond engagement rings.
Introduction to the James Allen Brand
James Allen was founded under the name R2Net in 2006 by technologists with family ties to the diamond business. Using the proprietary 360 degree diamond display technology invented by the company, they were the first online retailer to offer close up videos of each diamond. This revolutionized online diamond and diamond engagement ring shopping. James Allen have maintained their technological leadership and superiority in online diamond viewing technology through continued investment and innovation. They have extended their cutting-edge leadership into the online viewing of engagement rings and jewelry designs. This is a critical distinction of great importance for diamond engagement ring and jewelry customers as they consider, evaluate and ultimately spend thousands of dollars on an heirloom that will be with them for a lifetime.
James Allen's Brand Heritage, Background and Evolution
Shortly after their founding, James Allen began a relationship with Signet ( NYSE: SIG), the world’s largest diamond jewelry retailer, supplying online technology for their Jared’s chain of stores. This led to Signet buying the company for $328m in 2017 and investing heavily to grow James Allen into the global leader in diamond jewelry and diamond engagement ring online retail. As the world’s largest buyer of cut and polished diamonds, engagement rings and jewelry, Signet attached their powerful supply chain and huge diamond inventory and design capability to the online technological superiority of JamesAllen.com.
Signet is the conglomerate that owns and operates 2,700 diamond jewelry stores through 21 different diamond jewelry brands in three countries: Kay Jewelers, Zales, Jared’s, Banter by Piercing Pagoda, Diamond’s Direct, Rocksbox, Blue Nile and James Allen in the United States, Peoples Jewellers in Canada, H. Samuel and Ernest Jones in the United Kingdom as well as ten small regional nameplates. Signet’s annual sales exceed $7billion.
What this means for consumers is that James Allen is a company on which they can depend for selection, price, value, design, service, long term warranty and product support. It means they benefit from the diamond buying, design and supply chain power of Signet but do not need to pay for the cost of stores in their purchase price. It means consumers can trust this brand and do not need to worry about the longevity of James Allen: Signet has maintained a strong history of profitability and growth for decades and is considered one of the largest publicly traded companies in the United States and is included in the Russell 3000 Index.
James Allen Product Range and Quality
James Allen Diamonds
James Allen complies with the Kimberley Process, the global organization that was established to eradicate the sale of conflict diamonds. The company is also a member of the Responsible Jewelry Council, of which parent company Signet was a founding member. James Allen meets with our approval in their efforts and commitment to selling certified, ethically sourced, conflict-free diamonds.
Our Co-Founder spent years in the mined diamond business but left in part as he learned more about the legacy of mined diamonds and the many loopholes within the Kimberly Process. His early involvement in lab grown diamonds was largely driven as an effort at personal redemption for the past. He believes that in our efforts to perpetually improve the enforcement of conflict free diamond mining and trading we must be vigilant and persevering. The Kimberly Process was established in 2003 and the Responsible Jewelry Council founded in 2005. Not enough has been done in the intervening decades since. He has been known to quote the words of Ethics of the Fathers that though “We are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are we free to desist from it”.
It is critical to understand the difference between price and value when buying a diamond. All four C’s ( see our section on certification below) impact the price of a diamond and must be considered before determining value. Quality of craftsmanship is critical. Integrity and trustworthiness of the seller is particularly important when buying a diamond. James Allen’s diamonds are curated for best gemological laboratory certification, conflict free diamonds and best of all four C’s. Combine that with their warranties, customer service and the reassurance that comes with being owned by the largest specialty retailer in the world, ( Signet has been around since 1949 and has 2023 worldwide sales of over $7billion) and a diamond jewelry shopper can feel safe and supported when buying a James Allen diamond or diamond engagement ring.
James Allen Natural Diamonds
James Allen offers more natural diamonds than any of the major online diamond retailers surveyed. On February 13, 2025 we observed 185,141 natural mined diamonds from which to choose. The breadth of their selection is the largest among all online diamond retailers, featuring 113,192 round brilliant cut diamonds and 71,966 fancy cut diamonds. More than 90% of all James Allen natural diamonds are certified by the Gemological Institute of America, the GIA. This is critically important because the GIA is the strictest gemological grading laboratory, which assures consumers of the quality and value of their diamond purchase. We also like that many of the diamonds on James Allen we examined were relatively recently certified. This shows that James Allen carefully analyzes and selects every diamond it posts for sale. Some online diamond retailers allow any vendor to post any diamond on their websites and will have older certificates. These older, slow to sell diamonds can signal a poor grade on one of the 4C’s—generally the cut, or a high degree of fluorescence.
Drawing on over four decades of experience, the Co-Founder notes that James Allen’s commitment to offering a curated selection of predominantly GIA, recently certified natural diamonds is a hallmark of their dedication to quality. This ensures that James Allen customers receive gems evaluated not only by the industry’s most respected grading authority–known for its strict standards in assessing the 4C’s, cut, color, clarity and carat weight –but that also meet the rigorous ethical and quality standards of the gemologists at JamesAllen. Imagine holding a diamond that sparkles with a brilliance so intense it rivals the stars. James Allen’s curated selection ensures that each diamond not only meets the highest standards of quality but also tells a story of impeccable craftsmanship and ethical sourcing
Our Editor and our team of experts have produced a detailed analysis of the different natural diamond cuts and shapes offered by James Allen and the percentage that are GIA certified on February 13. 2025. Here is a sample GIA GIA certificate we selected randomly from the James Allen online diamond store:

Summary of James Allen online natural diamonds:
Over 185,000 natural diamonds available
92% are GIA-certified
100% are conflict-free
Predominance of recently cut and certified diamonds
Relatively competitive prices
Wide variety of shapes and cuts, including
Round Brilliant cut: 113,192 diamonds
Fancy cuts: 71,966
James Allen Lab Grown Diamonds
The lab grown diamonds on James Allen are highly curated and the 50,241 diamonds on their site as of February 12, 2025 are more than ample. This is because 95% of them are “colorless”, meaning the top three colors D, E and F; and nearly 100% of them are VS2 or better, a very high clarity; and nearly 100% are also Ideal cut – the very best cut.
Our Editor and team members were early pioneers in the validation and acceptance of lab grown diamonds in 2017. As the technology for growing gem quality diamonds has improved, accelerated and migrated to India, the price of lab grown diamonds have come down enormously. They are now at a low enough cost that the founder strongly advises consumers to only consider buying the best, with 1 carat, F VS2, ideal cut as the minimum. ( More on this later.)
So rather than crowd their website with hundreds of thousands of lower color, clarity, carat and cut diamonds, James Allen curates and limits their offering to what is best for their customers. We appreciate James Allen pre-selecting the lab grown diamonds available on their site as it makes the buying process that much simpler.
We also appreciate that James Allen does not clutter their site with smaller sizes of lab grown diamonds so as to show a big (and confusing) number of diamonds for sale. With a 1.06 carat, D VS2 lab grown diamond selling for $810 and a 3/4ct selling for $510, consumers should not consider anything less than a full 1 carat diamond when buying a lab grown diamond.
Because of the much lower price of lab grown diamonds JamesAllen uses certificates from the International Gemological Institute, IGI, for the preponderance of their lab grown offering. We agree with this decision because the cost for certification from the IGI is markedly less than the GIA and using GIA could increase the cost of a lab grown diamond by a double digit percentage. Sample IGI certificate from the JamesAllen website:

Summary of James Allen online lab grown diamonds:
Over 50,000 certified lab grown diamonds available
Overall best priced lab grown diamonds among survey group
95% are D,E,F or colorless diamonds
Nearly 100% are VS2 or better clarity, a super high clarity
Nearly 100% are ideal cut, the very best cut
86% are 1ct or larger
100% are conflict-free
James Allen's Diamond Pricing and Value
James Allen Value
When buying natural or a lab grown diamond, the prices at James Allen are the very best value. As an online diamond jewelry company they are a fraction of what a consumer would pay in a traditional store. In a side by side comparison with the other two major online diamond retailers, James Allen prices were the same or lower in the categories we surveyed. Their return policy, customer support, diamond expertise, trade in policies and warranties are equal to or better than our survey group ( see detailed analysis below). Most of all, as part of the largest retailer of diamond jewelry in the world, with a heritage going back to 1949, the confidence a buyer can have in purchasing from James Allen is unmatched. Our Editor was a major supplier to several of the Signet divisions in the past. He knows the company well and knows they have the means to source their diamonds better than others, the morals to always stand behind their products and the money to be in business while others come and go.
James Allen Natural Diamond Price Comparison
In our survey of the largest three online retailers of diamonds, we compared the prices of a 1ct H VS1 excellent cut natural diamond with no fluorescence certified by the GIA. James Allen offered the very best price.

James Allen Lab Grown Diamond Price Comparison
In our survey of the largest three online retailers of diamonds, we compared the prices of a 2ct D VS2 excellent cut lab grown diamond certified by the IGI. James Allen offered the very best price.

James Allen’s prices in lab grown are best across so many sizes and qualities. We also surveyed results for 3ct F VS2 ideal cut lab grown diamond certified by the IGI, where James Allen was close to $300 less than Brilliant Earth and $400 less than Blue Nile.
James Allen's Diamond Buying Experience
Remember, the diamond is likely the most expensive part of any diamond engagement ring purchase so it is important to take the time to research and learn about the 4C’s. More on the 4C’s later.
James Allen Website Usability
Being able to view the diamond clearly online is of primary importance. The James Allen 360 HD proprietary, online diamond video system is the very best in the world and every diamond is magnified 40x so a shopper can view every imperfection, even those not apparent to the naked eye. James Allen’s 360° HD diamond imaging system is a significant leap beyond the industry norm of 10x magnification. In a store consumers might get to compare a few diamonds. Some jewelers offer a consumer a 10x magnifying glass or loupe, which takes some time to understand how and where to position it, while at the same time handing the buyer a diamond in a special tweezer which also takes time to master. Should a shopper manage a brief view of a diamond this way, they are only able to view one diamond at a time. That is not as useful to a consumer as actually comparing six or eight diamonds side by side.
This technology not only enhances the buyer’s confidence by allowing a detailed inspection of the diamond’s facets, but it also reduces the risk of misrepresentation, a common concern in online purchases. We like that James Allen shows actual diamonds when you search their website and not just lists with stock or still images because it makes it so easy to compare many different diamonds. In our test we were able to compare six certified diamonds simultaneously on an iPhone.

and eight online diamonds simultaneously on a 15 inch MacBook pro.

We could instantly rotate the eight diamonds on our screen as slowly or quickly as we wanted and we could see the top, bottom and sides of every diamond. Being able to compare diamonds is the best way for a buyer to learn about diamonds and to identify the one they desire most. James Allen has perfected this process by ensuring consistency in every diamond video: same clarity, scale, aspect, lighting and background color.

As a shopper gets closer to a final decision, James Allen offers a “Super Zoom” feature. Here is an image of Super Zoom on my 15 inch Apple Mac:

The diameter of the diamond shown is 7.39mm or less than a ⅓ of one single inch in real life, .29 of an inch, to be exact, but measures nearly 4 inches on my Mac and 2 inches on my iPhone:

And the full 360 HD rotation works just as well in Super Zoom

Looking at several different diamonds at extreme magnification, selected from the thousands on James Allen, is a better way to shop than in a store. We believe a buyer will make a better decision from the private, relaxed environment of home. Where a store will ultimately pressure a person or couple to buy, at home you can take days, weeks or even months to learn about and compare diamonds until you find the one that speaks to you. On your phone, iPad or desktop you can magnify any natural or lab grown diamond 40x and rotate it 360 degrees. The GIA, the most trusted geological laboratory in the world, certifies your diamond based upon 10x magnification. So having a technology that allows any buyer to examine any one of thousands of online diamonds by a magnification of 40x is clearly an advantage for the consumer. We have not seen a better system for buying diamonds.
James Allen's Customer Service and Support
James Allen's Diamond Expert Services
Many first time buyers may not understand how to evaluate a diamond. James Allen offers a real time diamond inspection service where an expert–and not a salesperson on a commission– will share a screen and teach customers everything, one diamond at a time. JamesAllen customer service professionals are essentially a free diamond education resource. They will also aid customers in deciding between a lab grown diamond or a natural diamond.

In our Editor's instant-chat he found the James Allen diamond expert prompt, knowledgeable and patient in teaching and later suggesting alternative diamonds as options.

Most importantly he helped our Editor find a less expensive diamond and encouraged him to buy it. That is not something a customer could expect if he or she were facing a commissioned salesperson in a store.

When questioned on his training, he explained he was not a certified gemologist but had been internally trained and had been advising clients for three years. Our Editor has bought and sold literally billions of dollars and millions of carats of rough (uncut ) and polished (cut) diamonds. He is not a trained gemologist either. He too was internally trained by his father who was trained by his grandfather. Anyone with a good teacher can learn about diamonds and diamond grading and one doesn’t need a certificate from the GIA school to be best in class. Signet has offices in all the world’s diamond cutting centers and has on its staff some of the finest and most skilled diamond buyers, graders and sorters. Their internal training is unrivalled – well except perhaps the training our Editor got from his late father.

At my request, the James Allen consultant emailed further diamond options, within the hour, one of which was 30% less expensive than the diamond I initially selected:

The exceptional James Allen diamond team of experts is an important advantage for consumers. First, a diamond customer can take all the time he or she needs to get educated on diamonds by having this free teacher. In addition to cut, color, clarity and carat weight these experts can go deeply into the minutiae of diamond cutting like table and depth percentage. Though few if any one can detect these differences after a diamond is mounted and set, there are buyers who wish to explore this level of technical detail and James Allen experts are equipped and ready to do so. Secondly, the diamond expert can pull from any one of 50,000 different diamonds, offering a customer myriad options of every kind and at every price point and explaining the pros and cons of each. This is not something available in a store and not a service we have seen executed nearly as well anywhere online. Thirdly, the James Allen diamond experts are there to educate a customer and help him or her find the diamond that best fits their budget and desires. They are not commissioned salespeople compelled and trained to force a sale.
James Allen's Diamond Certificates
Independent diamond certification is done principally by two gemological laboratories, the GIA and the IGI. Both are good, though the GIA has the reputation for being somewhat stricter on the grading of color and clarity. What is measured and then printed on each certificate are the specific elements that make up the 4 C’s. The 4Cs—cut, color, clarity, and carat—are the foundational parameters used in diamond grading.
Cut is the primary determinant in the diamond’s ability to refract and emit light or brilliance.
Color will determine the hue and thereby the brightness of that light.
Clarity is an indication of its visual purity under a magnification of 10x.
Carat weight measures and presents in the diamond’s size.
Our Editor explains in detail how to understand the GIA sample certificate below and what is important to a consumer and why it is important.
Date
The date the diamond was examined and certified by the gemologists at GIA. This is important for consumers because if a diamond is old inventory, there is probably something undesirable or sub standard about it.
Report Number
This is the individual GIA certificate number unique to this diamond. It has also been microscopically laser inscribed on the side of the diamond. It does not impact the refraction or shine and will not be visible without at least 10x magnification. This is important because it can protect buyers from diamond fraud or substitution, which, though rare, is a risk when repairing a ring at an unethical jeweler. The number is also logged on the global database of GIA certificates, providing a permanent record of your diamond. This can prove very important should a consumer need to make an insurance claim and cannot locate the printed certificate received when the purchase was made.
Shape
The outline of the diamond when viewed from the top down, while the cut is defined by the pattern of the facet arrangement. Most buyers prefer a round also known as a brilliant cut diamond. Other shapes are collectively referred to as fancies. The most popular of these today are oval, pear and emerald. Historically marquise and princess cuts were also popular,
Measurements
The diamond’s dimensions are in millimeters. For a round diamond it is the minimum and maximum diameter and the depth. Non round diamonds will use the length, width and depth. This is important information a buyer should learn and understand as these impact the brightness, fire or light of the diamond.
Carat Weight
The weight as measured in carats to the nearest 1/100th of a carat. A carat is equal to 0.2grams.
Color
Describes the degree to which a yellow hue is present. Color is graded on a scale from D-Z though most gem quality diamonds are within the D-J colors. D is the whitest and by K even an untrained eye can detect the yellow hue. This will be an important consideration for buyers as prices of a D color will be higher than a J, particularly for a natural diamond. The tradeoff a consumer will often have to make is between color and carat weight.
Clarity
Describes the degree to which natural inclusions or blemishes are visible under 10x magnification.
Cut
Determines the light reflecting properties, also known as the fire, scintillation or brilliance of the diamond’s appearance. In the opinion of our founder, cut is the most important of the 4C’s because even the finest diamond if poorly cut will not refract light optimally and thus will emit inferior fire and brilliance.
Polish
Polish describes the smoothness of a diamond's facets. A high-quality polish will leave little to no scratches and slightly optimizes for maximum brilliance.
Symmetry
Symmetry describes the degree to which a diamond's facets are mathematically aligned to emit maximum light. A symmetrical diamond emits high levels of fire and brilliance.
Fluorescence
Fluorescence causes diamonds to emit a soft, bluish glow when exposed to UV light. The Fluorescence grade describes the color, and strength of color when a diamond is graded under UV light. The founder prefers diamonds with no fluorescence.
Conclusion on James Allen Diamonds
James Allen makes it easy to shop for a diamond at a price that fits your budget. The information, education and ease of shopping they offer is not only pioneering but is born of a deep understanding of the 4C’s of diamond quality, diamond pricing, GIA certification of their natural diamonds and IGI certification of their lab grown diamonds, and diamond warranties to support any purchase. Buying diamonds online from James Allen is easy because of how simple it is to move around their site and find exactly what you want. They are amazingly well priced, yet still offer more shopping assistance, customer service and after purchase care than any other brand we tested.
James Allen Diamond Engagement Rings
James Allen has an enormous variety, more than 400 stunning engagement ring designs. The manufacturing quality and craftsmanship of James Allen rings meets or exceeds the very high standards of our Co-Founder by all criteria. Years ago James Allen bought a very fine jewelry factory in New York City (Timeless Designs) with whom our founder was familiar. They kept all the design team, master jewelers and the founder. Though James Allen’s manufacturing base now includes factories in India, Thailand and China, they alone among all major online diamond engagement retailers directly employ master jewelers and full gold and platinum casting and jewelry polishing facilities right in New York City. This is important for consumers because should you need your ring resized, repaired or simply refurbished, your precious heirloom can be serviced in-house, right away. The quality and jewelry manufacturing capabilities of James Allen set them apart from most every jeweler online or in stores.
The breadth of the James Allen diamond engagement ring assortment will cover everything a diamond engagement ring shopper might want. Their classic solitaire setting is not only beautiful but, can be customized to five different gold variations and platinum. The pricing of the 14kt gold solitaire (on February 12, 2025), at $315, is the very best priced solitaire we found:

Taken together with a diamond like the D VS2 1.06ct diamond mentioned above in our section on lab grown diamonds:

This allows a James Allen diamond engagement ring customer to spend only $1,125 ( before sales tax) to get a scintillating, perfectly cut colorless certified diamond set in a beautifully manufactured custom made 14kt gold ring. Our Co-Founder considers this to be one of the best entry level diamond engagement ring values available anywhere. It checks all the boxes an informed and discerning consumer should want.
James Allen offers much more selection of diamond engagement ring designs beyond the classic solitaire. Like most tier-one websites they offer a broad assortment of traditional diamond engagement ring designs in the following categories:

But unlike most other online diamond jewelers, they also offer more than one hundred “Unique” designs not seen on any other websites ranging from the exotic and ornate ‘Marquise Dual Halo Diamond Engagement Ring’

to the cutting edge ‘Black and White Gold Bezel Diamond Engagement Ring’

Should you still be unable to find a design that satisfies your aesthetic or you have an idea for a style that is both distinct and highly personal, James Allen allows you to custom build a ring from a menu of components on their The Ring Studio.
James Allen Fine Jewelry
James Allen is a fully stocked diamond jewelry store with more designs, styles and options than most any online diamond jeweler or traditional jewelry store. The quality of the craftsmanship is excellent and mirrors the exemplary standards of their diamond engagement rings. The breadth of the assortment covers basics like diamond stud earrings, diamond tennis bracelets and anniversary rings, but also offers distinctive collections of elaborate and elegant designs. The pricing of basic lab grown diamond stud earrings on James Allen, like the entry level solitaire ring, is a great value.
Lab grown diamonds and natural diamonds are well represented offering any buyer a myriad of choices in a variety of metals. Some, however, may feel there are too many choices. The company does try and address this by including a search by price feature and a search by occasion feature.
James Allen Aftercare
Shipping
James Allen offers free shipping worldwide and will ship all orders over $500 overnight, including the cost of return shipping. This takes all the risk out buying online before a consumer can actually see and touch the actual jewel as you might in a store. We believe this is better for consumers because the buyer can wear, examine and show others their jewelry without the pressure often associated with store salespeople.
Returns
James Allen stands behind their product with an industry standard 30 day return policy offering a 100% refund, and they will pay return shipping. Because you are buying your diamond ring or jewelry sight unseen, this is really important for buyers. This takes all the risk out of an online purchase versus being in a store. More importantly a customer can wear, examine and show others her diamond engagement ring, wedding band or jewelry in their own home and under their natural light. Jewelry stores spend a fortune on the best, whitest ceiling lights. And most in-cabinet lighting is just 18inches from the jewelry. This kind of light is entirely different from most people’s homes or normal outdoor daylight. Jewelry store lights are engineered to make all their diamonds explode with light. Better to select your heirloom in the light and quiet of your own home.
Warranty
James Allen offers an industry standard lifetime warranty against manufacturer's defects.
Ring Resizing
They also offer a one time free ring resizing within the first year, which is industry standard.
Personalized Engraving
Free engraving is a wonderful feature James Allen offers on all its diamond engagement rings and wedding bands. Buyers of diamond engagement rings may want to engrave each other’s names and / or their wedding date in the ring.
24/7 Customer Service
Having a person and not a robot on the other end of a phone call or chat to discuss and review a diamond, jewelry style or the status of a purchase, repair or return distinguishes James Allen from most other jewelers. When we Googled the name of the diamond expert with whom our Editor chatted, we were particularly pleased he was an American based in Maryland and not someone in a distant country,
Lifetime Trade-in
The lifetime trade in/trade up policy is slightly sub standard on natural diamonds in that they demand the buyer purchase a new diamond for twice the price of the original diamond to apply 100% credit for the initial purchase.
They also offer zero trade in value for the ring or setting. Though this is disappointing, it is the least important of aftercare services as few consumers actually ever upgrade.
James Allen Review Conclusion
In conclusion, James Allen stands out as a premier online diamond retailer, offering an unparalleled selection of certified diamonds, competitive pricing, innovative technology and diamond expertise that enhances and distinguishes the buying experience. Their commitment to customer satisfaction is evident through comprehensive services like 24/7 support, lifetime warranty, and free maintenance. While the lack of physical showrooms may be a drawback for some, the advantages of shopping with James Allen make it a top choice for purchasing diamond engagement rings and jewelry.
